I acquired my first camera when I was in grade 5. I remember taking it with me to capture images while on a field trip to the zoo. Despite a few shots of my fingers, seeing my own images come to life when they were printed was a magical experience. I began studying photography more seriously when I was in high school, spending most weeknights locked in the darkroom developing my own black and white images. I knew I enjoyed photography, but never realized how much a part of me it would become. It wasn't until I later got married and had a family when I started picking up my camera not just casually, but with a purpose.
When I'm not being a mother, wife, or student, I spend my time involved in various ministries. I've spent the past few years highly involved in a water and winter clothing ministry that helps the homeless and working poor in downtown Hamilton, Ontario. Spending time with less fortunate people has provided me ample opportunity to give of myself, lend an ear, and develop interesting friendships. It has also helped strengthen my confidence level. Now I'm less fearful of approaching people whom I don't know, which is quite beneficial for me as a photographer!
